The floods hit Russia's southern Krasnodar region struck overnight without warning, local people said. More than 140 people are now known to have died.

Many residents spent the night in temporary shelters, amid fears of more floods in the region.

Witnesses described seeing the water uproot traffic lights - electricity and transport networks have been badly disrupted.

The popular holiday destination of Gelendzhik was also badly affected.

The worst affected town is Krymsk, with scores of fatalities.
