FIFA U-17 World Cup: Flamingoes Coach Optimistic
Coach of national U-17 women football team, Peter Dedevbo is optimistic about his wards chances after witnessing his team draw Canada, Colombia and host Azerbiajan in group A for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Dedevbo said his side will progress from the group.
Speaking on his return from Azerbaijan the coach said: “It’s a pretty evenly matched group. All the teams at the tournament will be going to Azerbaijan to play the beautiful game and all the teams have same goal to win.”
He said he is grateful to the NFF for the support given him and his team enroute the qualification for the world cup. He promised that the girls will be called back to camp soon. “With the draws over and done with, I and the technical department will discuss the possible date for resumption to camp which won’t be long.”
Flamingoes and the other teams in their group will play their group matches in the two cities of Baku and Lankaran. The tournament holds between September 22 and October 13.
Meanwhile, three Flamingoes are excited about the draws and are eager to be called back to camp in preparation for the world cup. Victoria Aidelomon captain of the team who plays club football with Rivers Angel as a defender said with hard work and God’s favour the team will do well. “We thank God for the draws and I believe we will qualify from our group. In 2010 at Trinidad and Tobago we were drawn against the host country now history is repeating itself. I see no big deal in playing the host nation because as long as we triumphed over the host nation in 2010 I know we will beat Azerbiajan in front of their fans. I have added responsibility now as the captain and I want to lead my team to glory. I believe by God’s grace we will qualify from our group and go past the quarter-finals stage which we were eliminated at the last world.”
Oluchi Ofoegbu, defensive midfielder with Delta Queens said: “I think it is a relatively easy draw and I believe we will qualify from our group.”
Chidinma Edeji who plays for Bayelsa Queens and was adjudged the ‘man of the match’ in the last qualifying match against Zambia where she scored 2 goals said: “Surely, we will come out of our group. This is my first world cup and I am going to give it my best shot.”
