UN-Habitat Cup Competition: Nigeria, Kenya To Represent Africa

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN–HABITAT) has selected Nigeria and Kenya to represent the African continent in the inaugural edition of the UN-Habitat football competition scheduled to hold during the forthcoming UN World Urban Youth Assembly in Naples, Italy. Secretary, country coordinator Nigerian Youth Habitat Network, Uzoh Ifeanyi disclosed this to newsmen at the weekend in Abuja.
To select Nigeria’s team that would represent the continent in the championship, he said the Nigerian Youth Habitat Network in collaboration with National Assembly House committee on sports, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and National Orientation Agency (NOA), will organize a pre-competition for young slum dwellers within the country. “The national organising committee in Nigeria has approached the Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Delta States for the hosting and sponsorship of the pre-competition to select the Nigerian team. The pre-competition tournament will kick start from July 20 to August 16, 2012.
According to him, the Un-Habitat cup competition with the slogan of ‘play balls not bombs’ is a giant step towards mobilizing youths against social vices as well as to discourage youths who are potential recruits for terrorist activities. He said it aimed to see the game of football as an effective tool of promoting social harmony, sustainability and development. He called for total support of the programme. “We hereby appeal to all stakeholders in the sports industry to support this lofty ideal from the UN-Habitat for the realisation of this concept which is intended to engage young people for meaningful development and against all forms social ills in our society,” He said.
