INEC Renews Commitment To Motivating Corps Members
The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has disclosed that the commission is poised to continue its bid to motivate corps members and guarantee adequate security to enable them to continue with their service in the conduct of polls in the country.
The INEC boss said that owing to the seriousness the commission attached to its relationship with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the conduct of elections, it had reviewed the existing Memorandum of Understanding between them, which would soon be signed.
Jega said when he received the NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Nnamdi Okorie-Affiah at his office in Abuja yesterday, where he reiterated INEC’s commitment to use corps members in order to ensure transparent elections.
“There’s this allegation that has been bandied about that youth corps members in Edo State have been compromised. I believe this matter will be posted to us and we’ll continue to inspire and motivate young men and women of NYSC to continue to do credible service to their motherland and, in particular, to continue to contribute positively to the integrity of the electoral process,” he said.
In his contribution, Brig. Gen. Okore-Affiah, refuted the allegation that corps members had been compromised in the run-up to Edo State gubernatorial poll.
He stated that there had never been any case of any of the corps members being compromised since the involvement of NYSC in the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
“I want to state that there’s no time corps members anywhere have been used to truncate the ideals of free and fair elections at whatever level. The corps members main responsibility is to ensure free and fair electoral process,” he said.
