CROSS River State House of Assembly yesterday urged the National Assembly not to ratify the Green-Tree Agreement that ceded Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.
The call followed a recent protest in Calabar by Bakassi aborigines over their plight.
The legislators’ move is also to guarantee the right of the people to appeal the International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment.
This was contained in a seven-point resolution which was unanimously adopted by the 25 members of the House in a motion for matter of urgent public interest moved by the member representing Boki II, Hon Jacob Otu Enya and seconded by Hon. Saviour Nyong of Bakassi constituency.
The House also called on the National Assembly to conduct a public hearing to determine issues surrounding the ceding of Bakassi.
It further asked that the Federal Government should find a lasting political solution to all issues regarding the disputed area.
It urged the Federal Government to immediately design and implement a realistic compensation welfare package for the displaced people.
According to them, Cross River State and Bakassi Local Government Area should be compensated for the loss of the ceded area.
They called on Cross River State Government to on behalf of the people of Bakassi, appeal against the ICJ judgment in line with the provision of the United Nations conventions article 63 which provides for appeal to any matter ten years after judgment.
