Presbyterian Church Kubwa Donates To Kuje Prison

As part of activities to mark this year’s Fathers’ Week, the Men’s Christian Association (MCA) of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN), Kubwa Parish, Abuja, has donated relief materials, including clothes, toiletries and other items to the inmates of Kuje Prison.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP, after a church service organised for the inmates, president of the association, Bro Chibueze Emeson said he was particularly delighted at the number of inmates who came to hear the word of God.
Emeson said, “I am delighted at the number of prison inmates who are ready to turn a new leaf. The church attendance is encouraging. Let me also use this opportunity to call on the federal government to make Nigerian prisons more reformatory than punitive.’’
He added that there was need for improvement in terms of security and comfort of prisoners and prison officials.
Reacting to the visit and donation, chaplain of the Prison Chapel, Inspector Christopher Micah expressed happiness that churches were identifying with inmates and prison authorities.
He said, “I am encouraged by the action of the visiting churches. Interestingly, I can say that through this gesture, at least 40 inmates repented within the last one month.’’
He continued, “We also run a school for the inmates here where we have about 75 students who have registered for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Already, three of our students who wrote last year’s Unified Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination are now reading different courses in the University of Lagos.’’
Micah also called on the federal government to do everything possible to strengthen the judicial system for speedy dispensation of justice as, according to him, “many of the inmates have no business being in the prison.
Also to mark Fathers’ Day last Sunday, the MCA honoured deserving Nigerians, among who are secretary to the government of the federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who got the Worthy Ambassador of Christ award, and Senator Ita Solomon James Enang, chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business.
