ASUU decries renaming varsities after politicians
AS the University of Lagos (UNILAG) resumed academic activities
yesterday, the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) has decried the renaming of the nation’s
universities after politicians.
Speaking on the issue, UNILAG’s ASUU chairman, Oghenekaro Moses Ogbinaka, described the practice as the arbitrary use of universities as a trophy for politicians and also declared its readiness to legally challenge the renaming of UNILAG to Moshood Abiola University (MAU).
The Union disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing to express its dissatisfaction over Federal Government policies and decisions especially as it affects education.
Ogbinaka said since the UNILAG’s name change, there had been great distractions in learning and research in the institution, adding that the situation would persist until justice was done.
He described the action as “an attempt by President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to use the half century old institution to score a misplaced and miscalculated political point,” urging him to have a rethink and urgently reverse the pronouncement.
