618 -- Li Yuan became Emperor Gaozu of Tang, initiating three centuries of Tang Dynasty rule over China.

1815 -- England's Duke of Wellington and Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard von Blucher defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in Belgium.

1942 -- British singer, songwriter and band member of The Beatles, Paul McCartney was born.

1946 -- Italian football coach,  Fabio Capello was born.

1972 -- 118 were killed when a plane crashes two minutes after take off from London Heathrow Airport.

1975 -- Saudi Arabian Prince Museid was publicly beheaded in Riyadh for the assassination of King Faisal.

1979 -- The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (II) was signed by the United States and the Soviet Union.  

2006 -- The first Kazakh space satellite, KazSat was launched.
