APGA denies merger talks with ACN, CPC
THE All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) yesterday denied that
it was holding talks aimed at alliance/merger with the Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) or any other
party.
Rising from a South-East stakeholders’ meeting held at the Enugu residence of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the party noted that though “we are not averse to working with other political parties or making policy statements, but that it must be done in consultation with relevant stakeholders and in the interest of the party.”
The party distanced itself from recent statements and interviews by Alhaji Sani Shinkafi and Gbenga Afeni in some newspapers, saying that they do not represent the views of APGA even as it condemned the utterances unequivocally.
In a six-point communiqué read by the Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, Dr. Tim Menakaya, APGA urged all members to continue to work together for the unity and progress of the party and the country at large.
The communiqué read in part:
• “That All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as a party has never at any time discussed or agreed to work with, or enter into alliance/merger with the Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) or any other party.
• “That we are not averse to working with other political parties or making policy statements, but that it must be done in consultation with relevant stakeholders and in the interest of the party.
• “That we re-affirm our commitment to the ideals and vision of our late leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, that APGA will continue to exist as a broad-based party, firmly rooted in the South-East and not in a merger or alliance with any other party to subvert.”
The communiqué further re-affirmed the party’s resolve “as agreed at the meeting of May 26, 2012 that there is an urgent need for the re-organisation of our party’s structures and organs at all levels, as may be found necessary.”
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, wife of the late Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Ambassador Bianca, noted that though she was not an official of the party, “but you all know, APGA’s meetings are held routinely in this residence. What we are doing is not new; we are hoping to use these meetings to give the party greater cohesion, greater strength and unity of purpose.”
